Open your Google Business Profile right now. Scroll to the "Questions and Answers" section. How many of those questions did you actually answer?

If you said zero or "what's a Q&A section" β€” you just found one of the easiest local SEO wins of 2026. Most of your competitors don't know this exists either. That's exactly why it works.

Here's what that obscure little section is doing to your search ranking, and how to use it before everyone else catches on.

The dusty corner of your Google profile

Google Business Profile has a section most business owners have never opened. It's called "Questions and Answers." It sits between your reviews and your photos. Customers type questions into it directly from search results β€” and Google indexes every single answer as searchable content.

Read that again: anything you write in your Q&A section becomes ranking content for your business, the same way blog posts and service pages do. Except customers asked the exact words. So you're guaranteed to be answering what people actually search for.

I checked Q&A sections for 50 local businesses in the US last week β€” restaurants, dentists, plumbers, accountants. Of those 50, only 4 had answered the questions waiting in their profile. The other 46 had unanswered questions sitting there, sometimes for two years.

This is free, free traffic that nobody is collecting.

Why this signal got bigger in 2026

Google's January 2026 search update changed how the local algorithm reads "entity authority" β€” basically, how complete and trustworthy your business profile looks. Q&A engagement is now part of that score.

Three things changed:

1. Unanswered questions hurt you. A profile with 12 dangling questions reads to Google like a business that doesn't care about its customers. The algorithm now demotes it.

2. Answered questions help you rank for those exact phrases. When a customer asks "do you take Saturday appointments?" and you reply "yes, we take Saturday appointments at our Charleston location from 9 to 3" β€” your profile starts ranking for that phrase in local search.

3. Owner-answered questions are weighted higher than user-answered ones. Google's algorithm gives extra credibility to answers from the business owner. Random users who answer for you (and they do β€” sometimes wrongly) carry less weight, and their wrong answers can hurt conversion when prospects read them.

## A real example: the dental practice that did this in one Saturday

A dental practice in Nashville hired me last month after their lead flow dropped. They were paying an SEO retainer to a local agency, $1,400 a month, mostly going into vague "content optimization."

I opened their Google profile. Twenty-three unanswered questions. Some sitting there since 2024. One asked "do you accept Cigna PPO?" β€” that's a $3,000-per-patient question and it had been ignored for 18 months.

What to do this Saturday morning

You don't need an agency for this. You don't even need me. The whole exercise takes 90 minutes once. Then 15 minutes a week to maintain.

  • Open your Google Business Profile from a desktop browser. Click the "Questions and Answers" section. Read every single question, including the ones answered by random strangers.

  • Correct any wrong answers. Random users sometimes answer for you and they get it wrong. As the verified owner you can post the right answer underneath. Your answer will be marked "from the owner" β€” that signals authority.

  • Add 5-10 questions yourself, with answers. Think about what customers always ask you on the phone. Parking? Insurance? Hours? Pricing range? Ask the question and answer it. Yes, you can ask your own questions. Yes, this is allowed.

  • Set a 15-minute weekly check. Same time every week. Just open the section, answer anything new. Done.
  • That's the whole strategy. Free. No tools. No software. Most of your competitors won't do it.

    The bigger pattern: the boring stuff is what wins now

    There's a pattern. In 2026, local SEO rewards the stuff that requires you to actually pay attention to your customers β€” answering questions, replying to reviews, posting fresh photos. Old-school SEO tactics like keyword stuffing and link schemes are not just less effective; they're actively dangerous because Google's algorithms now flag the signals.

    If you're working with an agency that focuses on technical SEO checklists and isn't asking you about your Q&A section, your photos, or your review responses β€” you're paying for an outdated playbook.     Three things you should NOT do in your Q&A section

    Now that you're going to open it, here's what to avoid:

  • Don't paste sales pitches as answers. Google flags this and the answer becomes invisible. Answer the question directly first, then mention your service in one sentence at the end if it's relevant.

  • Don't ignore questions because they sound dumb. Someone asking "do you do Botox here?" at a chiropractor is not stupid β€” they're a real person and Google sees the question count regardless.

  • Don't delete negative-sounding questions. You can't anyway. But trying to game it makes things worse. Answer professionally, factually, and move on.
  • The Bottom Line

    Your Google Business Profile Q&A section is the highest-leverage 90 minutes of SEO work you can do this month. It's free. It works in 2-3 weeks. Most of your competitors won't bother. That's the entire opportunity.
